    • Betraktninger om middelalderens Vágar basert på undervannsarkeologiske kilder

Wickler, Stephen; Falck, Tori; Nymoen, Pål (Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2013)
    • Boathouse Excavation at Skonsvika

Nilsen, Gørill; Wickler, Stephen (Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2011)
The remains of both prehistoric and historic period boathouses are visible in the landscape as collapsed walls of turf and rock or stacked rocks with an openended rectangular outline. These structures are located along present and former shorelines, river and stream banks, lakes and other bodies of water. Their openings usually face the water to facilitate boataccess.

Although there are several well preserved Viking boat burials from Norway, until recently palaeoecological research on their context has often been limited. Research on fossil insect remains in particular can provide valuable forensic information even in the absence of an actual body. Here we present archaeoentomological information from a boat burial at Øksnes in Vesterålen, northeast Norway, an ...
    • The medieval stockfish trade: a maritime perspective from northern Norway

Wickler, Stephen (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021)
Life in northern Norway has been dependent on the sea and marine resources since initial settlement following the retreating ice at least 11,500 years ago. Small islands have played a significant role for maritime communities since the Mesolithic when occupation of offshore islands reflected the maritime orientation of hunter‑gatherer settlement. Although settlement along the coast, including ...
    • Nordlendingen tar de geologiske ressursene i bruk: et arkeologisk perspektiv

Skandfer, Marianne; Jørgensen, Roger; Wickler, Stephen (Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2022-10)

Vesterålen is the northerly chain of islands and the seven islands of Lofoten lie to the south. The climate of Lofoten is mild despite this high latitude location. Temperatures ...
    • The preservation of ancient DNA in archaeological fish bone

Ferrari, Giada; Cuevas, Angelica; Gondek, Agata; Ballantyne, Rachel; Kersten, Oliver; Palsdottir, Albina Hulda; van der Jagt, Inge; Hufthammer, Anne Karin; Ystgaard, Ingrid; Wickler, Stephen; Bigelow, Gerald F; Harland, Jennifer; Nicholson, Rebecca; Orton, David; Clavel, Benoît; Boessenkool, Sanne; Barrett, James H; Star, Bastiaan (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-01-09)
The field of ancient DNA is dominated by studies focusing on terrestrial vertebrates. This taxonomic bias limits our understanding of endogenous DNA preservation for species with different bone physiology, such as teleost fish. Teleost bone is typically brittle, porous, lightweight, and is characterized by a lack of bone remodeling during growth. All of these factors potentially affect DNA preservation. ...
